Our History
In 1907, Maria Montessori opened the Casa dei Bambini (Children’s House) in a low-income district of Rome – which marks the start of Montessori education.

Dr. Montessori first published her approach to education in 1909 in Il Metodo della Pedagogia Scientifica applicato all’educazione infantile nelle Case dei Bambini.
In the United States, the first Montessori school opened in 1911 in Scarborough, New York.
In Canada, the first Montessori School opened in 1912 in Baddeck Nova Scotia: Beinn Bhreagh - The Nova Scotia Home of Alexander Graham Bell.
In 1919, Margaret Potts opened The Calgary Montessori School - the second Montessori school in Canada, which is the longest continuously operating Montessori School in North America.
In 1929 Dr. Montessori established the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) to support Montessori schools, teacher education programs, and national organizations around the world.
